Fresh from the press: congratulations to Carlos, Clara, and the other co-workers on their accepted paper in Frontiers in Immunology on the role of Atg5, a crucial autophagy gene, in T cells and their responses against tumors. In a combined effort of researchers from RUB, the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, and the University of Turku (Finland), we identified and characterized novel activities of small molecules with respect to autophagy regulation. Inhibitors of autophagy repressed replication of respiratory viruses such as Influenza A and SARS-CoV-2 and normalized augmented autophagy levels in a model of neuronal vacuolation and spinocerebellar degeneration (NVSD).

The congress of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) took place in Vienna from August 17th – 22nd. About 3000 immunologists from all over the world met in the beautiful Austrian capital and discussed science. Among the highlights were the DGfI satellite symposium, in which the early and advanced career prizes were awarded to outstanding young scientists, and the EFIS lifetime award to Prof. Klaus Rajewski.

Ingo Schmitz comments on Tagesschau.de on a new study, which could explain part of the story why other primates suffer less often from cancer than humans and which could lead to more efficient CAR T cell therapies.

Congratulations to Carlos and his co-workers for their publication in Cell Death & Differentiation on the role of Ripk1 in regulatory T cells! It's a story of „the obvious is not always the right explanation". Not everything connected to Ripk1 is about death. The next meeting of the DGfI study group Signal Transduction will take place within the frame of the STS Meeting on Signal Transduction: Receptors, Mediator and Genes in Weimar on November 3rd-5th 2025.Registration will soon be open via https://sigtrans.de/

April 2025

Congratulations to Philipp Stüve, Luciana Berod and her team for their study on acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1) in Treg biology. Anne-Marie and Ingo took part in the study that was published in Molecular Metabolism (doi: 10.1016/j.molmet.2025.102111). We are happy that we could contribute.

January 2025

Ingo Schmitz was elected Secretary General by the members of the German Society for Immunology (DGfI). Please visit dgfi.org to find out about the study groups, the schools of the Academy of Immunology and more – and become a member of the society!

October 2024

Sabrina, Carlos and Ingo participated in the 30th conference of the European Cell Death Organization (ECDO) in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg. Carlos had good discussions at his poster and we met old friends and got to know new colleagues.

October 2024

Alicia and Christine attended the DGfI Autumn School in Merseburg and had a great time with lots of immunology in a quite nice environment.

September 2024

Andre gave an oral presentation on his IkBNS T cell PhD project at the 6th European NF-kB Workshop in Marburg. There were also many other interesting talks and we had very good discussions and interactions with other NF-kB researchers from inside and outside Europe.

July 2024

Our Flow Cytometry Facility is now part of the Medical Research Services of the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum. Welcome FlowCore@RUB!

June 2024

The meeting of the DGfI study group T cells took place on June 27th-28th. It was the last time happening in Marburg.  Many thanks to Magdalena Huber (Marburg) and Tobias Bopp (Mainz) for organizing this terrific meeting for many years – and, of course, to Michael Lohoff (Marburg) for initiating it! And congrats and thanks to Dietmar Zehn (Munich) and Bertram Bengsch (Freiburg) for being elected as new speakers of the study group and for taking over the meeting organization!
